Basketball

Basketball has evolved into one of the sports in the world that is most widely participated in and produces remarkable global icons. Despite its Canadian-American history, basketball is turning into a well-known sports code across the African continent, with a number of professional leagues/competitions at local, regional and continental championships. At the Mahikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) our basketball team prides itself on helping athletes unlock their potential through teamwork, patience, social skills and discipline.

NWU Mahikeng basketball teams have done their part to raise the flag of the NWU. The men’s team were the 2017 Dr KKBL champions and in 2018 finished in the fourth place in the Dr KKBL competition. Our women’s squad were the 2018 runners up in the Dr KKBL competition and in 2019 achieved a third-place finish in the same competition.

Basketball

Potchefstroom Campus

Welcome to the home of basketball at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University (NWU). Here we provide world-class on-campus training facilities and create a competitive environment that satisfies the hunger of a growing sport.

The women’s team has a first and second team, which shows the growth of female players in the sport, while the men’s team has a first team, a second team and a developmental team. Established players take the initiative in sharing their skills and knowledge with beginner players to ensure the success of the club and provide a sense of belonging for everyone.

This is where players are motivated to excel as student-athletes by participating in leagues and tournaments held on university campuses across the country, for example 3on3, residence league, coaching and officiating clinics, USSAs, Varsity Cup and Basketball National League opportunities.

Come and shoot hoops! Come and realise your full potential!

Vanderbijlpark Campus

NWU Vanderbijlpark Basketball went from being the underdogs to becoming a powerhouse. Our facilities have given us a chance to perform at our best against other institutions. The staff and players work hard to make sure the purple army is always well represented.

The NWU Vanderbijlpark basketball team aims to build students through sports. NWU Vanderbijlpark hosts two annual tournaments (senior and under 19). We use this as a platform to recruit and offer bursaries to prospective students. NWU Vanderbijlpark has done well at national level. We have had two very valuable players at USSA level (Phindile Nkosi in 2018 and Cynthia Mudau in 2019). Two women also represented the USSA national squad in 2019 (Phindile Nkosi and Ikageng Aphane).

The women are rated second in the country after achieving silver twice in a row at the USSA championships (2018 and 2018) and achieving second place in the Varsity Cup. The men are ranked fifth in the country. Four of our women have also received national call-ups. In addition to all these achievements, we have produced a large number of graduates. We as NWU Vanderbijlpark Basketball take pride in our purple army, as they represent us well.
