Mahikeng Campus facilities
The Mahikeng Campus provides students and athletes with access to outstanding sporting facilities designed to support participation, development, and high-performance training across a wide range of sports.
At the heart of the campus sports offering is a dedicated Soccer Institute (with newly erected VIP stadium), complemented by a modern swimming pool, extensive outdoor sporting facilities, and a versatile indoor sports hall.
Both the Soccer Institute and the Great Hall feature fully equipped gymnasiums that cater for circuit training, aerobic conditioning, and general fitness development. The Great Hall furthermore serves as a multi-purpose indoor venue and accommodates a variety of sporting codes, including badminton, martial arts, squash, boxing, sport dance, indoor soccer, volleyball, netball, and basketball.
Outdoor facilities feature three multi-purpose courts, four tennis courts, two basketball courts, four soccer fields, a rugby field, a softball field, and a cricket pitch. These facilities provide ample opportunities for both recreational participation and competitive sport.
The campus swimming pool offers an ideal environment for students of all skill levels, whether they are learning to swim for the first time, refining their technique, or improving their competitive swimming strokes.

Potchefstroom Campus facilities
Aquatics
Situated at the Potchefstroom Dam recreational centre, NWU Aquatics is home to a vibrant canoe club catering for both K1 and K2 rowers, as well as Canoe Polo athletes. The facility offers students and athletes the opportunity to train and compete in a dynamic watersport environment that promotes performance, teamwork, and an active lifestyle.
Athletics
The NWU Athletics programme continues to establish itself as one of the leading high-performance athletics environments in South Africa. NWU Athletics has produced outstanding performances at national and international level, with multiple student-athletes selected to represent South Africa at major championships. We offer the following:
- Track and Field (with specialized coaching in all events).
- Cross Country
- Road Running
In addition to this the NWU has the best coaching staff in the country, including Olympic, World U20 and Senior Championships and Commonwealth coaches.
High Performance Institute of Sport
The High-Performance Institute of Sport (HPI) at the North-West University's Potchefstroom Campus in South Africa is a premier training hub for elite athletes and sports teams from around the world. Specializing in high-altitude training at 1,350 meters, the HPI offers exceptional facilities that optimize athletic performance.
With over 2,000 international athletes training here annually, including over 100 athletes who prepared for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, the HPI is a globally recognized center for sporting excellence. As an officially recognised Hammer Strength training facility, we provide a comprehensive, all-inclusive environment tailored to the needs of high-performance athletes..
Netball
The NWU Potchefstroom netball facilities provide an outstanding platform for athlete development and high-level competition. With 9 all-weather courts, a dedicated grass training area, a modern clubhouse, and convenient amenities, the venue is designed to support both players and spectators. NWU Netball regularly hosts major national tournaments, reinforcing its reputation as a leading destination for the sport.
NWU Sports Village
Comfortable accommodation in the heart of Potchefstroom’s sporting hub.

Located on the iconic Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds, NWU Sports Village places guests within walking distance of cricket, rugby, athletics, netball, tennis and soccer facilities. The renowned NWU High Performance Institute is also just a 3-minute walk from our front door, making Sports Village the ideal destination for athletes, teams, business travellers, families and visitors alike.
Hockey (synthetic fields)
NWU Hockey Potchefstroom facilities boast two world-class synthetic hockey fields featuring the internationally acclaimed GreenFields TX Elite EL 15 playing surface. Recognised among the finest hockey facilities in South Africa, these fields have hosted numerous international matches, tournaments, and high-performance events.
Both fields are equipped with international-standard floodlighting supplied by BEKA Schréder, delivering an exceptional 1000 lux lighting level to ensure optimal visibility for training, competition, and televised events.
Designed to serve a wide range of users, the facilities provide a professional environment for the local community, residence sport, junior development, and the elite NWU Hockey High Performance programme. The NWU Potchefstroom Hockey Fields continue to play a key role in developing top-level hockey while offering an outstanding sporting experience for players and spectators alike.
Tennis
Home to one of South Africa’s premier university tennis precincts, the NWU Potchefstroom tennis facilities offer a world-class environment for both competitive and recreational play. The precinct features 10 all-weather courts, 2 grass courts, and 5 clay courts, providing athletes with diverse playing surfaces for training and competition. As a proud host of national and international tournaments, NWU Tennis continues to attract top talent and showcase sporting excellence.
Indoor Sports Centre
Indoor Sport Centre activities include the following:
- 6 x Squash courts
- 1 x Multipurpose sports hall that are being used for Basketball, Badminton and Netball

Vanderbijlpark Campus facilities
The NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus offers a comprehensive range of modern sports facilities that support both high-performance athletes and recreational participants. Designed to foster sporting excellence while enhancing the student experience, the campus provides quality venues for training, competition and student wellness.
World-class facilities include:
- Synthetic Hockey Turf – An international-standard GreenFields TX Elite EL 15 astro turf, providing a premier venue for university, provincial and community hockey.
- Rugby Precinct – Three well-maintained rugby fields, including two premier match-quality fields, complemented by floodlighting, a modern clubhouse, changing rooms, spectator facilities and a fully equipped gymnasium.
- Football Facilities – Multiple high-quality training and match fields supporting men's, women's and junior academy programmes.
- Cricket Grounds – Two quality cricket fields with professional playing surfaces, excellent changing rooms and spectator-friendly surroundings.
- Netball Courts – Two all-weather courts designed for year-round training and competition.
