Volleyball

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan, physical director of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in Holyoke, Massachusetts. It was designed as an indoor sport for businessmen who found the new game of basketball too vigorous. Morgan called the sport “mintonette,” until a professor from Springfield College in Massachusetts noted the volleying nature of play and proposed the name “volleyball”. Volleyball can be a lot of fun to play. Volleyball at the NWU Mafikeng has two courts – one indoor court at the multipurpose Great Hall and one outdoor court.

In 2018 the Volleyball team won the 10th annual SANDF SAI National Volleyball League. They went on to win the Mafikeng Local Volleyball Association League. The team made their first appearance at the USSAs in 2019 and were placed in 8th position from a number of 22 institutions that participated in the 2019 USSA tournament. The same year the team took 3rd position in the North West Volleyball Giants League (provincial league). Earlier in 2020 the team hosted an institutional tournament in which the ladies team took the gold medal and men’s team took the bronze medal.
